Natural Ponds & Water Features

Natural Ecosystem Ponds, Waterfalls, Streams & Pondless

Natural Ecosystem Pond Builds (Aquascape-style)

A Natural Ecosystem Pond is a living water feature designed to work with nature — not against it. Rather than relying on chemicals, it uses a balance of:

  • Circulation & oxygenation (moving water)
  • Mechanical filtration (a skimmer that removes debris from the surface)
  • Biological filtration (beneficial bacteria living on filter media, rocks and gravel)
  • Aquatic plants (nature’s nutrient control)
  • Rocks & gravel (adds huge surface area for beneficial bacteria to thrive)

Together, these elements create a pond that’s:

  • Clear and naturally balanced
  • Wildlife-friendly
  • Designed to be lower maintenance than “ornamental pond” setups

Why choose a Natural Ecosystem Pond?

1. A pond that stays healthy through natural balance

A true ecosystem pond includes the full “puzzle” — circulation, filtration, plants, rocks/gravel (and optionally fish) — so the water stays in balance the way it does in nature.

2. Clearer water through proper filtration (not chemicals)

Aquascape’s ecosystem approach typically combines:

  • A skimmer (mechanical filter) to remove leaves/debris and house the pump
  • A biological waterfall filter that supports beneficial bacteria and creates the start of the waterfall

3. Plants and gravel do a lot of the heavy lifting

Beneficial bacteria need surface area to colonise — and rocks, gravel and filter media provide loads of it. Aquatic plants then use excess nutrients that would otherwise feed algae.

Fully bespoke to your garden and the way you want to use it

Your ecosystem pond can be tailored to:

  • Size & shape (from compact courtyard ponds to large, showpiece builds)
  • Waterfall / stream layout (the sound level and visual drama you want)
  • Planting style (naturalistic, clean/modern, rewilding-friendly)
  • Edge finish (boulders, cobbles, gravel beaches, stepping stones)

Designed to look like it’s always been there

We shape the surrounding landscape so the pond feels like part of the garden:

  • Natural stone placement and levels
  • Gravel beaches / access points
  • Planting and screening to soften edges
  • Paths and seating areas positioned for the best views

Serving Bristol, Bath, North Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.

Ready to explore a Natural Ecosystem Pond?

If you’re considering a pond and not sure about:

  • Where it should sit for the best light and view
  • How big it needs to be
  • Whether to include a stream/waterfall
  • What style of planting you want

…we can help you make clear, confident decisions.

Pondless Water Features (Disappearing Waterfalls & Streams)

A Pondless Water Feature gives you the movement and sound of running water — without an open pond.

Water flows over stone as a waterfall/stream, then disappears into gravel and is collected in a hidden underground reservoir, where it’s pumped back up to the top and recirculated.

Most systems include:

  • A lined underground reservoir (water storage)
  • A pump vault for easy access and maintenance
  • Pipework returning water to the waterfall source

Why choose a Pondless Water Feature?

1. The calming sound of water, with a cleaner look

You get the sensory impact of a waterfall or stream — with the “water source” hidden below ground.

2. Simpler upkeep than a pond

Aquascape notes pondless waterfalls can be very easy to look after — often mainly topping up for evaporation — and they can be switched off without an ecological need to keep running.

3. Fast installation and flexible design

Because there’s no open pond excavation and edging detail, pondless builds can be an efficient way to add a high-impact feature.

Fully bespoke to your space and lifestyle

Your pondless feature can be tailored to:

  • Size & shape (compact cascades to longer streams)
  • Stone style (natural boulders, slate look, clean contemporary)
  • Sound level (gentle trickle vs louder waterfall)
  • Positioning (viewable from kitchen, patio, garden room, seating area)

Designed to feel integrated, not “dropped in”

We landscape the surrounding area so it looks natural:

  • Planting pockets and gravel margins
  • Pathways and stepping stones
  • Feature lighting for evening atmosphere
  • Seating areas placed for the best angle and sound

Serving Bristol, Bath, North Somerset, Wiltshire and Gloucestershire.
