A true ecosystem pond includes the full “puzzle” — circulation, filtration, plants, rocks/gravel (and optionally fish) — so the water stays in balance the way it does in nature.

• A skimmer (mechanical filter) to remove leaves/debris and house the pump
• A biological waterfall filter that supports beneficial bacteria and creates the start of the waterfall
   

Beneficial bacteria need surface area to colonise — and rocks, gravel and filter media provide loads of it. Aquatic plants then use excess nutrients that would otherwise feed algae.

A Pondless Water Feature gives you the movement and sound of running water — without an open pond.

Water flows over stone as a waterfall/stream, then disappears into gravel and is collected in a hidden underground reservoir, where it’s pumped back up to the top and recirculated. 

Most systems include:

• A lined underground reservoir (water storage)
• A pump vault for easy access and maintenance
• Pipework returning water to the waterfall source
   

You get the sensory impact of a waterfall or stream — with the “water source” hidden below ground. 

Aquascape notes pondless waterfalls can be very easy to look after — often mainly topping up for evaporation — and they can be switched off without an ecological need to keep running. 

Because there’s no open pond excavation and edging detail, pondless builds can be an efficient way to add a high-impact feature.
